Education Commissioner Manny Diaz Jr. defended new African American history standards amid criticism from teachers and Democratic lawmakers.

The state Board of Education on Wednesday approved controversial academic standards for instruction on African American history. Teachers across Florida had asked the board to put the proposal on hold. First Coast Connect spoke with the president of the Florida Education Association, Andrew Spar, to get a better understanding of these new standards and what they may mean for educators and students.

RSV treatment

The Food and Drug Administration approved the drug Beyfortus earlier this week to protect infants and toddlers against RSV, which has been the leading cause of hospitalization among babies in the United States. Dr. Mobeen Rathore professor and chief of pediatric infectious disease and immunology at UF Health in Jacksonville, gave us more insight on the issue.
