Donal Godfrey and Iona King

Sixty years ago, a house in Murray Hill was bombed. Strangely, the event has largely faded from Jacksonville’s collective memory. A new documentary uncovers the little-known history, focusing on the targeting of a Black- first grader, Donal Godfrey, who had integrated into Lackawanna Elementary School in 1964. The documentary Just Another Bombing chronicles the attack on Godfrey’s family.

If you'd like to attend a screening, Godfrey and his mother, Iona King, will both be in attendance at three upcoming events. Further details can be found here.

Guests:

  • Hal Jacobs, producer and director of “Just Another Bombing.”
  • Tim Gilmore, author and English professor.

Science Sis

Many STEM programs in schools aim to involve more girls and young women in science and technology. However, a local initiative founded by STEM enthusiast Erica Wille is specifically dedicated to helping young girls of color overcome barriers to enter a field traditionally dominated by white men. The program, called Science Sis, seeks to inspire young girls by showcasing successful women in STEM. Science Sis recently featured Mariah, a second grader from John E. Ford Elementary, who shared her love for STEM and the experiences gained from the program.

Science Sis will be at the Museum of Science and History for Women in STEM night on Feb. 27. If you are interested in attending, you can find more information here.
