Barbara Clemons is a great-grandparent at Hidden Oaks Elementary. She has lived on the Westside for 38 years and believes the school consolidation conversation has focused too much on saving money and not enough on educating children.

A new report by Jacksonville Today examines growing concerns about equity in decisions about education resources and community schools ahead of a school district meeting Tuesday night.

Guests:

  • Megan Mallicoat, education reporter at Jacksonville Today.
  • Will Brown, race, inequality and poverty reporter at Jacksonville Today.

Then, a new five-year survey of child mortality finds that sleep-related infant deaths are down around the First Coast, but racial disparities continue to dominate. We talk about the report with representatives of Northeast Florida Healthy Start about what the research shows and what still needs to change.

Guests:

  • Faye Johnson, CEO of the Northeast Florida Healthy Start Coalition.
  • Dr. Mark Hudak, neonatologist and University of Florida College of Medicine — Jacksonville professor in the department of pediatrics, NEFHSC board chair.
  • Dr. Janet Dukes, fetal and infant mortality review action plan coordinator.

And, part fairy tale, part shape-shifting performer showcase, the critically acclaimed one-man show Bing! plays for one night only at the Adele Grage Cultural Center as part of a fundraiser for All Beaches Experimental Theatre.

Guest:

Jason Woods, consulting artistic director and strategist at ABET.

Plus, as it prepares to move its foodie footprint to St. Augustine and beyond, we talk to the culinary creators behind Southern Grounds about sustainable, seasonal, locally sourced cuisine.

Guests:

  • Ryan Randolph, chef at Southern Grounds.
  • Eddy Escriba, culinary director at Southern Grounds.
