On Monday’s show: A surge in financial sextortion

Cyberscams are getting more sophisticated.
Deborah Lee for NPR

A recent training session for local prosecutors focused on the staggering escalation of sextortion cases involving young boys. We talk to the cyber intelligence analyst and investigator who led the training about his research into the criminal enterprise known as the Yahoo Boys. The network is blamed in large part for the surge in sextortion cases targeting minors and youth on social media platforms over the past 18 months. Their efforts have resulted in a 1,000% increase in financial sextortion cases during that period, according to the FBI, and a 7,200% increase in financial sextortion cases involving children, which have been linked to at least 21 suicides.

Guests:

  • Paul Raffile, cyber intelligence analyst and author of A Digital Pandemic: Uncovering the Role of ‘Yahoo Boys’ in the Surge of Social Media-Enabled Financial Sextortion Targeting Minors.

  • Thomas B. Waters, director of the city of Jacksonville’s Neighborhoods Department.
