9/21/2016: Weld; GTM Reserve; Real World Safety Conference; St. John The Divine; 'Unelectable You'

Former Republican Governor of Massachusetts and current Libertarian vice presidential candidate William Weld joined host Melissa Ross to discuss the campaign. The Friends of the GuanaTolomatoMatanzas, or GTM Reserve, are hosting its annual “Oceanwise” awareness event Saturday, we heard from Executive Director Ellen Leroy Reed. Monique Burr Foundation executive director Lynn Layton discussed its upcoming Real World Safety Conference. Father Kick Louh and choir director Maria Chrissovergis of St. John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church spoke about their 100th anniversary in Jacksonville and the church moving to a bigger location on Beach Boulevard. We also heard from Matt Hovde, director of the Second City and Slate collaboration “Unelectable You” coming to the Florida Theatre.

William Weld

In an election in which both the Republican and Democratic presidential candidates have high negative ratings, some voters are looking for another option. Weld told Ross he and Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson see their support grow because they are able to tell people where they stand on the issues. Weld will hold a town hall meeting Thursday night at Jacksonville University.

Friends of GTM Reserve

It stretches down A1A from Ponte Vedra Beach to near St. Augustine and is one of the most beautiful areas on the First Coast, but many people still don’t know much about it. What used to be known as Guana State Park is now the GTM Reserve. Its supporters will hold the seventh annual “Oceanwise” fundraiser Saturday. Reed told Ross about the group’s mission to raise awareness of the reserve and preserve the estuaries.

Real World Safety Conference

It’s an important tool to learn about cyberbullying and other strategies to teach children and their parents digital safety. The Monique Burr Foundation’s Real World Safety Conference brings together many experts to discuss the challenges of protecting today’s youth. Executive director Layton told Ross about the Oct. 1 conference at the University of North Florida.

St. John the Divine

It’s one of the oldest churches in Jacksonville. St. John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church is commemorating its 100th anniversary, before relocating to Beach Boulevard.

Several events are planned over the next several days. Louh and Chrissovergis spoke with Ross about the history of the church and plans for the future.

Unelectable You

Chicago-based improv troupe Second City has teamed with Slate magazine to produce “Unelectable You”. It’s a evening of comedy, music, insight and topical musings. It will take place Friday night at the Florida Theatre. Ross was joined by director Matt Hovde for a preview.
