Former Jacksonville mayor and 5th District candidate for Congress Alvin Brown on First Coast Connect.

Former Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown says he’s confident of an upset victory, even though polls show incumbent Congressman Al Lawson leading in Florida's 5th Congressional District race.

The 5th Congressional District snakes west from Jacksonville to Tallahassee. Brown said on First Coast Connect Monday that Lawson hasn’t done enough to alleviate poverty and fight for better jobs in the region.

And he also said he’ll champion public education if he’s elected to Congress:

“We’ve got to invest in our local public schools, got to invest in teachers. Al Lawson is the only Democrat who voted with Jeb Bush in the Florida Senate for vouchers to drain billions of dollars from public education.”

Congressman Al Lawson accepted an invitation to appear with Brown on Monday's First Coast Connect but cancelled citing a scheduling conflict.
