Florida's mental health crisis; declining immunization rates; Jags win in Nashville

Eden Hebron, 19, displays pictures of artwork she made while getting help to work through trauma and mental health effects after witnessing a gunman kill a close friend and two other students in Florida's 2018 high school massacre in Parkland, during an interview with Associated Press journalists, Tuesday, March 8, 2022, in Hollywood. Hebron's experience shows how many of the survivors have grappled with severe mental health issues that derailed their adolescence and greatly impacted their families.

The nation’s young people are in crisis.

Florida hospitals are jammed this winter with children and young adults visiting emergency rooms after suspected suicide attempts.

Research conducted by the CDC finds that nearly 45% of high school students were so persistently sad or hopeless in 2021 that they were unable to engage in regular activities. Of those surveyed, nearly 1 out of every 5 seriously considered suicide, and 9% of the teenagers tried to take their lives during the previous 12 months.

Meanwhile, trying to access mental health resources has become extremely difficult for many of those who are suffering.

Guests:

Falling immunization rates

Florida’s children are at a 10-year low when it comes to getting all of their required immunizations, according to a new report from the Florida Department of Health.

Duval County was the worst among counties for seventh grade vaccinations at 84%, and it was the only district with an overall student immunization rate below 90%.

Guest: Dr. Sunil Joshi, president of the Duval County Medical Society Foundation.

Jags win in Nashville

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ up-and-down season continues: After being blown out by Detroit last week, the team pulled off an upset victory this weekend over the Tennessee Titans.

It was the Jaguars’ first win at Nissan Stadium since 2013 and the first against the Titans since 2019.

Guest: Josh Torres, WJCT News sports analyst.
