On Thursday’s First Coast Connect, we examine the complicated life and continuing legacy of local poet Alan Justiss.
On Saturday, the city’s Main Library will celebrate the man known as “Jacksonville’s Poet Laureate,” spotlighting the new Special Collections archive of Justiss’ writings and personal ephemera. The event, Collecting Alan Justiss (To The Hawks Lend Your Heart), will take place at 2 p.m. in the Ansbacher Map Room.
Ahead of that event, our roundtable discussion will feature poetry, music and stories from the people who remember the difficult, frequently drunk artist, who is nonetheless lionized as a mentor to generations of writers and poets.
Guests:
- Nestor Gil, visual arts professor at Lafeyette College.
- Tim Gilmore, author, educator and historian at Jax Psycho Geo.
- Claire Manos, special collections librarian at the Jacksonville Public Library.
- Troy Lukkarila, documentary filmmaker.
- Walter Coker, photojournalist.
Then, Yaya Cardona of Cre8Jax shares this week’s most anticipated arts and cultural events.
