The rise of home deliveries shipped in cardboard boxes plus the holiday season of gift-giving create so many opportunities for recycling that it might seem odd that Jacksonville is trying to figure out how to bolster the program that keeps trash out of the landfill by giving it a second life.

Republic Services

When it comes to recycling in Jacksonville, what some of us were taught years ago no longer applies. Why does that matter?

"One dirty item can contaminate an entire truckload, so make sure recyclables are empty, clean and dry," says the website of recycling contractor Republic Services.

St. Johns County

St. Johns County is distributing new, much larger recycling carts starting Monday.

The upgrade is aimed at getting more people to recycle.

Advanced Disposal, an integrated environmental services company, is upgrading St. Johns County customers to 95-gallon recycling carts for their curbside recycling service at no additional cost.

St. Johns County spokesman Michael Ray says this is part of Florida’s effort to reach its recycling goal of 75 percent. This goal was set by the state in 2008.

The City of Jacksonville is automating it’s curbside recycling program. That means new recycling bins for residents.

"Soon, three-fourths of the city will have the new carts," said Jeff Foster, director of Solid Waste for the City of Jacksonville.

The new recycling bins have bright yellow lids and they will be picked up every-other week by a truck with a big mechanical arm. And they can hold much more than the old blue bins.

"All the plastics 1-7, metals, glass, paper, cardboard, styrofoam...even cellophane wrapping from packaging," said Foster.
