Hurricane Preparedness: Christian Smith, Northeast Florida Chapter Of The American Red Cross

Carter Roush

A Hurricane disaster kit is not something you should be scrambling to assemble as a hurricane makes landfall.

Roads and stores could be closed or sold out of what you need. That’s why you should put together today, an emergency supply kit for tomorrow, with important items like batteries, flashlights and a weather radio.

Christian Smith, director of public support for the Northeast Florida chapter of the American Red Cross, spoke with WJCT's Michelle Corum about compiling those things you and your family may need at home (or on-the-go), starting with the basics.

You can find a comprehensive disaster supply checklist at JaxReady.com. And remember, during emergency situations, including severe weather, WJCT is your official radio outlet for emergency management information.

You can follow Michelle Corum on Twitter @MCorumonME.

Michelle Corum joined WJCT as "Morning Edition" host in 2012 and has worked in public broadcasting as an announcer and reporter for public radio stations in Lawrence, Kansas, and Interlochen, Michigan. She also manages WJCT's Radio Reading Service for sight-impaired listeners.
