It’s our First Coast Week in Review, where we discuss the biggest headlines of the week with some great minds in local journalism.
Among the topics discussed:
- Legislation is being considered that would prohibit Pride and Black Lives Matter flags at public buildings, which means they could be restricted not only on school campuses and city hall flagpoles but also on lapel pins for teachers.
- The Jacksonville City Council is still expressing concerns about the removal of a Confederate statue in Springfield Park. The council's main issue revolves around the legal justification provided by the city attorney.
- Last Thursday, the man affectionately known as “Boonie” passed away. Boonie, whose real name is Clifford Williams, was wrongfully convicted alongside his nephew Nathan Myers for the 1976 murder of Nina Marshall. In 2019, both men were released from prison.
- The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is asking the community’s help to solve a 6-year-old triple homicide. On Dec. 12, 2017, Ariyan Johnson, Quasean Trotter and their 10-month-old daughter, Arielle, were found dead after a fire in Arlington. The baby suffocated, and both adults were shot.
